Teaching Philosophy
I am passionate about teaching and regard it as an integral part of my academic role. My philosophy rests on three commitments. First, I make abstract ideas relatable: I introduce the theoretical foundations of each topic, then bring them to life through real business situations, from brainstorming the core competencies of a local Walmart store to debating the electric vehicle industry's profitability through Porter's Five Forces. Second, I treat students as proactive learners rather than passive recipients of knowledge, pairing lecture sessions with interactive case-analysis days where students build the analysis themselves on the board. Third, I build rapport with students: I learn every student's name before the first class, foster an inclusive environment (rated 4.8/5 by my students), and make myself accessible outside the classroom, because meaningful learning starts with strong relationships.
I am well prepared to teach the undergraduate capstone course in Strategic Management, and I am enthusiastic about offering courses in Strategic Management, Entrepreneurship, Strategic Leadership, Corporate Governance, Business Ethics, and Corporate Social Responsibility at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

What Students Say
"Ying was really passionate and always available for help. She really put a lot of work into the class it seemed and she cared."
"For being an 8am, I still truly looked forward to learning the material every class. … Professor Shi made tough topics easy to understand and always had her hand out to help when people asked. This was one of my last courses at Penn State and I think that it segways me into the real world nicely."
"I enjoyed doing the case studies every week. I like having a real-world connection to the content we are learning in class."
"Professor always made sure to get all students involved and valued everyone's input equally. Her opening up to our music tastes also shows her efforts to form a teacher/student bond (which I appreciated tremendously)!"
